Watching all those family get together commercials kinda got me reminiscing. So I drove over to Grandma ‘Bubbles’ Chicken home and sat her down on the couch.
“Dear Grandma Bubbles” I said, “I want to just chat with you about your life, before Gramps, say back in high school. Can we take a stroll down memory lane?”
“Well sure we can Sonny” she said, her eyes lighting up. “Grab that there photo album from the dern shelf yonder and let’s take a look.”
As she turned the pages showing the coop she grew up in, her first day of school and so much more, she paused when she saw the above picture. After a few moments here her eyes stayed fixed…
“Grandma… You okay?” I asked concerned.
“Isn’t he a dream boat? So yummy. This is a picture from the Sadie Hawkins dance in 19 and 54… at Manasquan High, in Monmouth County, New Jersey. That’s Johnny. He called me ‘tiny bubbles’ as my pet name. Ahhhhh… Such a man”.
She swallowed hard still starring at the page. “I gave it up to him that evening. The next day he told the whole school what we did. I didn’t care. Once my daddy got through with him though he stopped calling me. Then he stopped showing up at school… I nearly died from his rejection.”
“Next year I heard he changed what name he wanted people to call him. He went by ‘Jack Nicholson‘ after that.”
Grandma Bubbles just starred at the picture. She stopped talking except an occasional “Yum yum yum yum…”
She never even noticed that I left the room and drove off.
